In 2016, we gathered a small group of Christian DJ's for brunch. They ate and talked, worshipped and prayed together, little realising that this was the inauspicious beginnings of a new Third Space Ministries venture. Representing a range of ages, backgrounds and places across the UK, this diverse group of Christians bonded over a common love for God and heart for the music industry. As they shared their stories, themes began to emerge: the challenges of the DJ lifestyle, the ready availability and constant temptation of drugs; the mirage of success and accolade; the isolation forged by ambition and unsocial hours; the prevalence of depression and mental ill health, and the disconnect with church. But also, how often people are searching for greater meaning and are hungry to discuss spiritual matters, regularly providing opportunities to share faith. Over the 18 months that followed the group continued to meet, connect and dream together, growing from 5 members to now over 80.
Luke Rollins, is our DJ Ministry Coordinator
Luke began his adventure with God in 2010 after a stranger in a nightclub shared her faith with him and prompted his decision to begin a life following Jesus. He loves seeing how God uses music and art as a vehicle for authentic relationships and outreach. He is passionate about helping individuals realise their potential by encouraging their hidden gifts and talents. As someone who has worked as a DJ and a promoter, he understands the spiritual needs of the people working in these industries and is excited to see how the Holy Spirit brings love, encouragement and freedom to those who exist and work in dark and unforgiving nightlife environments. The need for a supportive, equipping Christian DJ community has been demonstrated in the last couple of years through the DJ Unity group and he is committed to seeing that community continue to flourish through worship, prayer, outreach, accountability and collaboration. He also believes the Church has an opportunity, through groups like DJ Unity, to reach those who would never consider setting foot in a Sunday morning meeting and that the radical love of God is the all transforming answer for a generation of music lovers, seeking identity, hope and security.
The groups exists through an online forum, quarterly gatherings, opportunities for playing at events, and developing chaplaincy within the industry.
