A few musings on Lent:
During the winter months, as we look out upon nature, it appears that very little is happening: no life; no growth; no fruit; lack of colour and vibrancy. But the wonder and mystery of it all is that something is indeed taking place, out of sight, underground, hidden in cases, cocoons or wombs. When the time is right, when the conditions are perfectly prepared, life springs forth in abundance of buds, blossoms, fruit, flowers, new life, colours, smells, light, warmth. But it cannot be rushed. Winter is a time of trusting in the unseen.
As we advance towards Easter and contemplate Christ’s journey to the cross, Lent can sometimes feel like this, a season of darkness and waiting, when the disciples were confused and feeling like nothing was going to plan. And then….resurrection!
God is at work behind the scenes. Don’t just rely of what you see with your own eyes, but trust in the promises of God’s word and the goodness of his Fatherhood.
As you take note of the early signs of spring around you over these coming weeks, may you hold on to the knowledge that God is at work. As you spend time in reflection on journeying with the disciples, may this Lent be a season of renewal and life, of building your faith and seeing beyond the surface.
